JOE SATRIANI
Speed Of Light
written by Joe Satriani
produced by Joe Satriani, John Cuniberti and Andy Johns
This is the first instrumental I threw in The List. It’s by American
guitar-tist Joe Satriani, and merited early inclusion from me
because, besides just being a really cool-sounding instrumental rock
track, it has something in common with my beloved and earlier
catalogued favorite Roxette song “Almost Unreal”: “Speed Of Light” here too was originally included in the Super Mario Bros. movie and soundtrack before being released commercially elsewhere. It features probably about 2/3 of the way through the film, as Mario’s rescued the missing Brooklyn girls, including his girlfriend Daniella, from the Goomba barracks. He cracks open the frozen barracks-adjacent pipe and takes the girls on a mattress ride through it, pursued by the Goombas, and musically narrated by... you guessed it, “Speed Of Light.” If you genuinely like the movie as I do despite its campy niche touch (which no doubt contributed to its box-office bombing), you’ll appreciate this scene/song. Also included on the soundtrack in May ’93, before being released on Joe’s Time Machine album on October 13th.
Update! Already made the page for the one song of his I know, but as of right now, it’s July 15th, 2021, which as it turns out is Joseph Satriani’s 65th birthday! Happy Birthday, JS!!
Have notes to add? Let me know!
